When it comes to owning a new Mitsubishi or any vehicle, one basic maintenance task that every car owner should be familiar with is how to change a tire. A flat tire can happen unexpectedly, nowhere near your Mitsubishi dealer. Being able to replace that flat tire quickly and safely can save you from being stranded.

Find a Safe Location

Safety should always be your top priority. As soon as you notice you have a flat tire, pull over to a safe location, ideally away from traffic. Make sure your hazard lights are on, and if you have reflective triangles or flares, use them to alert other drivers to your presence.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you start, it’s crucial to have all the required tools and materials on hand. You will need:

  • Spare tire
  • Jack
  • Lug wrench or tire iron
  • Wheel chocks or blocks
  • Flashlight (if working in low light conditions)
  • Gloves (to protect your hands)

Use the Wheel Chocks

To prevent your vehicle from rolling while you change the tire, place wheel chocks or blocks in front of and behind the tire that is opposite the flat tire.

Loosen the Lug Nuts

Before you lift the vehicle, it’s essential to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire while it’s still on the ground. Using the lug wrench, turn each nut counterclockwise, but do not remove them completely.

Lift the Vehicle

Position the jack under a sturdy part of your Mitsubishi’s frame. Consult your owner’s manual for the correct lifting points. Pump the jack’s handle to raise the vehicle off the ground until the flat tire is clear of the surface.

Swap Out the Flat Tire

Once the vehicle is lifted, finish removing the loosened lug nuts and take the flat tire off. Be sure to place it aside, out of the way. Mount the spare tire in its place and use your hands to tighten the lug nuts. Make sure the spare tire is properly aligned with the wheel bolts.

Lower the Vehicle

Gently turn the jack handle counterclockwise to lower your Mitsubishi. Once you are sure the vehicle is securely on the ground, remove the jack.

Tighten the Lug Nuts

With the vehicle on the ground, use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts further, alternating between nuts to ensure even tightening. This will help prevent the spare tire from wobbling.

Check the Lug Nut Tightness

Double-check the tightness of the lug nuts after you’ve lowered the vehicle. Ensure that they are all properly secured to the recommended torque specifications in your owner’s manual.

Stow Away Your Tools

Put away all the tools and materials you used in your trunk or storage compartments. Don’t forget the flat tire, as you may need it repaired or replaced.
